Writers Walk Circular Quay

Dotted around Circular Quay - from the Overseas Terminal to the west, through the bustling area in front of the ferry wharves and around towards the Opera House to the east - these discs commemorate Australian and overseas authors who have lived, visited or written about Sydney.

Some of the links seemed very tenuous to me, but it was a lovely way to spend a morning.
It was quite a challenge to get some of the photos thanks to joggers, buskers and seagulls :-)

If you'd like to see the entire list and read the inscriptions on each disc clearly visit here.

This post is linked to Saturday Snapshot and AusReading Month.

  1. What a great idea for AusReading Month Brona! Of course I've walked past/on/around these many, many times. I haven't always paid attention though, I do remember some of them, but some seem new to me. I like how you've put the view of Circular Quay and the Opera House in the shots too.

    1. Thanks for noticing my attempts at being artistic Louise!
I wanted to put the discs in context as well as showing the good views some of the discs have. I also tried to show the variety of people walking, mooching & jogging by.

  2. What fun that you captured them. The Charles Darwin one is a little stretch if he only spent two months there to claim him as their own, but... I probably wouldn't consider him a "writer" per se either. Still a great idea and encouraging to writers today to earn their very own plague. Here's Mine

    1. Yes, there were a few that seemed a desperate attempt to have a famous name on board!
I'd like to see some new one puts in to represent all the fabulous contemporary authors in our ranks now too.

    1. Normally Circular Quay is so busy that reading these discs is rather difficult. So I went in early one overcast Tues morning on my day off work to capture these pics.

  5. What a fun way to spend the day. Glad you didn't get run over by joggers or people pulling luggage!

  6. Clever idea, I like that. But watch out for those sea gulls while you are reading them!

    1. Yes, I've seen the seagulls at Circular Quay snatch chips out of people's hands!

  7. I love the discs, but what make the photos so interesting are the backgrounds. You seem to be able to tell such a lot about the by passers. My favourites are the athletic legs.

    1. Yes, I was pleased with that shot too. I was also happy to capture the people with luggage in front of Robert Hughes - one of our many creative people who moved o/s in the 60's to seek their fortune (as Australia wasn't a big enough or an appreciative enough pond for them.)

  8. This was so imteresting! I have only heard of a few of the writers ... amazing the number of authors, poets, and playwrights there are in the world! You always have wonderful photo tours!
