Bridge Climb

Recently I was chatting with Melissa from Avid Reader's Musings as she is thinking of coming to Australia for a holiday. One of the things I mentioned as a must do for anyone making the trek to Sydney for the first time is the BridgeClimb.

It got me thinking about the two times I climbed the bridge. The first time in 1999 (when it had only been open for about 8 mnths) and the second (at sunset) in 2007 with my (now) husband.
So I hunted around in my old albums to find a photo I could scan to share today.
In 1999 it was a chilly July day. The harbour and city were shrouded in fog and a light drizzle fell during our climb. But it didn't spoil the fun and I loved the misty views.

My Sydney Top 10 book says "Since BridgeClimb opened for business in 1998, almost two million people have climbed the bridge. The 3.5 hr guided climb over the arch is well organised and exhilarating, and there's no better way to appreciate the structure's enormity and beauty."

By 2007 you could buy digitalised souvenir photos instead, so the quality is much clearer for sharing. The sunset climb was spectacular. It was a balmy August evening with not a cloud in the sky. The city and the harbour looked amazing.
Unfortunately, I've not seen one single BridgeClimb photo that makes the individual look glamorous (including my two stepsons who climbed with their Pop for their 11th birthdays). But I guess the star of the day is the Bridge and her view :-)

  1. Oh me!! I'd love the view but I think climbing that high on a bridge would freak me out.

    What great shots!

  2. Wow! The background almost looks pretend! It sounds like fun but 3 1/2 hours also sounds pretty strenuous! I think once I got up that high I'd be totally freaked out and scared to look around. -Beth :) beth's book-nook blog

  3. I was pretty nervous and pumped full of adrenaline during the first climb. But it is soooo safe and sooo secure and so well managed that the fear factor disappears very quickly. You are strapped onto the bridge the entire time. The steps leading up the arch are wide and low and they stop to view the view several times.

  4. How gorgeous is that last shot! Too cute- I've never seen anyone else with a photo like that. Lovely that you've done it twice. I've never done a bridge climb- shame, shame, shame I know. Everyone I know who has done it has absolutely loved it.

  9. What great photos. There is no way I could get anywhere near those bridges. I have a real phobia of bridges, even quite small ones.
