Saturday Snapshot - Winter Flowers

One of the few good things about the middle of winter are zygocactus.
I have two - a pink one and a red.
They brighten up the dullest winters day!

I have been unable to open any wordpress blogs this past week, so I apologise for not visiting your blogs as per usual. I'm not sure if it's a blogger issue, my computer or something to do with the non-stop rain the last 10 days! Although I have just worked out that I can view wordpress blogs on my smartphone...it's just harder to read them :-)

Saturday Snapshot is a now being hosted by Melinda from West Metro Mommy

The rules are simple:

To participate in the Saturday Snapshot meme post a photo that you (or a friend or family member) have taken and leave a direct link to your post in the Mister Linky. Photos can be old or new, and be of any subject as long as they are clean and appropriate for all eyes to see. How much detail you give in the caption is entirely up to you. Please don’t post random photos that you find online.

  1. The first one looks like my Christmas Cactus which tends to bloom twice a year. Very pretty photos and plants.

    1. Yes Diane - I believe that zygocactus are called Christmas cactus in the northern hemisphere as that's when they flower for you :-)

  3. Those would spice up a gray day. Is it really the middle of winter there? I'm so confused because at the beginning of June someone in Australia said it was the first day of winter. Our first day of summer was June 21, so I assumed that would be the first day of winter for you. This hemisphere thing confuses me. Here's Mine

    1. Our seasons are officially based on the months...so winter started on the 1st June.

However we all tend to view the winter solstice on the 21st June as the "middle" - more from wishful thinking than anything else!! July and August (and usually September and October too) can still be quite cool to cold...so we're a long from being done :-(

At least, as from the 21st, the daylight hours get longer minute by minute and that has to be a good thing!

  4. It's fantastic to see these colourful flowers blooming in the winter. What a wonderful place you're living in. All my admiration go to the natural beauty of your country down under. We're having summer, but not much colour, since now our City (Calgary, Alberta, you might have heard it on the news) is cleaning up after the worst flooding in our Province's history.

    1. I had heard about your floods and wish you all a speedy clean up and recovery.

Aust is also prone to damaging floods followed the next season by equally damaging bushfires. Mother Nature's way of letting us know who really is in control!!

  7. My cactus is putting on all sorts of new growth, as it's in the summer cycle of growth ... it is a slamon pink-orange color when it blooms ... yours are just lovely. I particularly like that pinky/lavendar-ish blossom!

  9. My mum used to grow these - but I've never had any success with them. They're so lovely, brightening up the winter.

  10. Beautiful! My mom has one of these at her office and it's also blossoming now (in NY state). Maybe it should just be called a Winter Cactus since it's always winter somewhere! Wishing you good weather as we enjoy our summer here. :)

  11. My Dad was crazy about these when I was growing up so they remind me of childhood. The flowers are always so pretty, but the flowering so brief.

  12. They are beautiful! The top one looks very much like my Christmas Cactus. Are the others in a pot with some succulents?
Love those hardy plants and I am glad that they brighten your winter. :-)
